Composite wood products such as particleboards, fibreboard (MDF), etc., are widely applied in the furniture industry to replace the most expensive and rare natural wood. For the manufacture of the above products, particles, yarns, sheets or beams of wood are used with mixtures of special adhesives (polymer resins) capable of adhering to hot-pressure welding. For reasons of functionality, appearance and strength, many times the aforesaid wood products are overlaid with sheets of paper ingrained in oligomeric resins. These materials are intended to be used mainly for office, kitchen, bathroom, etc. However, due to their frequent use, there are significant disadvantages such as low hydrophobicity and oleophobicity, with the result that fingerprints or other pollutants remain on their surface. This reduces the aesthetics of the furniture and in addition creates the need for continuous cleaning. A second major disadvantage of all wood surfaces is the growth of microorganisms since our hands are the main source of contamination that is consequently transferred to the surface of the furniture. Despite the efforts made in recent years to solve these problems with the use of oily additives and antimicrobial agents respectively, this was not feasible. CELL4GLUE will implement a new strategy based on the modification of the surface of the composite wood products produced to become hydrophobic and / or oleophobic and at the same time antimicrobial.
